The libretto was written by Nicola Francesco Haym who used an earlier libretto by Giacomo Francesco Bussani, which had been set to music by Antonio Sartorio. The opera was a success at its first performances, was frequently revived by Handel in his subsequent opera seasons and is now one of the most often Handel’s most popular opera—both in his own lifetime and today—depicts the momentous meeting of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. This grand and ancient subject might suggest a vast, Cecil B. DeMille-style epic, but Handel’s operatic masterpiece takes the opposite approach. Synopsis. The action is based on Julius Caesar’s Egyptian visit of 48-47 BC.
