“It binds the toxins, Bio-Sponge™, the commercially available Di-Tri-Octahedral smectite product from Platinum Performance Inc., bound 99% of Clostridium difficile toxins A and B and Clostridium perfringens enterotoxins in one in vitro study and effectively neutralized Clostridium toxins in another study. Six horses were hospitalized, and lactated Ringer's solution and flunixin meglumine were administered IV. Additionally, 10% dextrose, corn syrup, and di-tri-octahedral smectite were administered PO. Twenty-seven horses died within 2 days after exposure. Two survivors (1 without clinical signs of toxicosis) made a complete recovery. Studies have shown that di‐tri‐octahedral smectite can bind the exotoxins of Clostridium difficile and Clostridium perfringens (Weese et al. 2003; Lawler et al. 2008). 2012-08-22 · Diosmectite (smectite, Smecta®; Ipsen, Boulogne-Billancourt, France) is an oral formulation of a natural aluminomagnesium silicate clay with a lamellar structure. It exhibits adsorbent properties, interacts with mucus, and has been shown to be an effective and well tolerated anti-diarrheal agent, reducing the frequency of stools and the duration of symptoms (see sections 2 and 4).

Administer twice daily for 6 days or as directed by your veterinarian. METHODS: Substances commonly used in equine practice (activated charcoal composition, di-tri-octahedral smectite, mineral oil and activated charcoal) were tested for their binding capacity for HGA using an in vitro incubation method. Di‐tri‐octahedral smectite is a type of clay that adsorbs C. difficile toxins in vitro, 28 and is commonly used in the treatment of CDI in horses. Probiotic therapy has been evaluated in humans with CDI. Results have been somewhat conflicting and equivocal, however, Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Di-tri-octahedral smectite effectively adsorbed C perfringens exotoxins in vitro and had a dose-dependent effect on the availability of equine colostral antibodies.
